The helper jar is a positive feedback activity where children write positive notes to each other and place them in a jar. The notes can be about anything their peers did to help them such as a kind gesture, sharing something, or cheering them up when they were upset. To set up the activity, provide a jar or container decorated with stickers or markers and index cards or paper for the children to write their notes on. Explain the activity to the children and encourage them to participate by writing positive notes for their peers. Once the helper jar is filled with notes, read the notes aloud at the end of the day or week. Invite the children to read their own notes aloud or allow children to read notes from the jar themselves. For younger children, you may need to point out when a peer does something worthy of the helper jar and help the child write it down. For example, “Wow! Kendall found the perfect block for your tower. She kept looking until she found it. Should we write that down and put it in our helper jar?”
