As children arrive for the day, create an area where children sign in by choosing their feeling. You can use popsicle sticks that have each child’s name and picture, as well as cans with labels of both words and pictures of varying emotions. Ask each child to check in by placing a popsicle stick in the can that best represents their emotion (sensations in the body). Use this as an opportunity to check in with children and explore feelings. Use phrases such as, "I see you checked in feeling sad today. How can I help you feel better?” or “I see that you checked in feeling worried this morning. Would you like to tell me about it?" or “I see that you checked in feeling happy today. Tell me more about your morning.” When talking about feelings, reinforce the concept by saying the label and pointing to the picture representing each emotion. Encourage children to tell you how they feel throughout the day. Children can move the popsicle stick as the day moves forward and their emotions change.
