A fidget is a small object that can be provided to a child to regulate their need for movement and/or touch. A fidget can be a squeeze ball, a pipe cleaner, or anything that a child can hold quietly in their hands. When choosing a fidget, be sure that the child understands that it is a tool and not a toy; if they start throwing it or it becomes a distraction, it is not effective in supporting the child's positive attention. You will know that a fidget is working if the child is able to focus, keep their hands and bodies to themselves, or sit still during times when they previously had a difficult time. Fidgets are great for circle time, seated lessons, and wait times.
