Sometimes things don’t go as planned, especially when working with children. This gives us a lot of opportunities to model communication. When you notice something not going as planned, you can start with “I see…” and then describe what is unfolding in front of you. “I see it is hard to sit for this story.” Then, you can model how to respond. “Let’s take a movement break and then try again.” The more you model this, the more examples children have for noticing something and communicating it. You can then help an individual child with the same language, “I see you want a turn.” And model how to respond, “You can say, ‘I want a turn when you are done.’
