Ask children to hold out their hands, palms up, and wiggle their fingers, like the fluttering wings of a butterfly. Encourage them to flutter their butterflies to their head, shoulders, stomach, knees, and toes. Then challenge them to use their right hand to float their butterflies up the left side of their body, starting at their toes; then, repeat the process with their left hand and right side of their body. Activities that ‘cross the mid-line’ engage a child’s right and left sides of their brain at the same time and can be a great first step in helping them to refocus. One way to modify this strategy is to encourage children to use their ‘batman’ fingers; in which their hand flutters like a bat, instead of a butterfly.
