Physically stepping back from an upsetting situation often helps diffuse intense feelings. Teach children how to take a giant step backwards when something happens that they do not like, or someone says something upsetting. Use role-play or puppets to practice taking a giant step backwards. For example, role play an argument with a coworker in front of the children. Tell the children how you are feeling and point out what you do, "I am getting very upset. I am going to take a step backwards. Watch how I do this."
