Get a clear jar with a lid (such as a Mason jar) and fill it almost to the top with water. Add a large spoonful of glitter glue or dry glitter mixed with glue to the jar. Replace the lid and shake the jar to make the glitter swirl. Use the following script or adapt it to fit your needs:
“Think of the glitter as your thoughts when you're stressed, angry, or upset. Look at how they swirl and make it difficult to see clearly. When you're upset, it is hard to think clearly. Don't worry, this is normal for everyone, even adults. [Now place the jar in front of them.] Watch what happens when you stay still for a few moments. Keep watching. See how the glitter starts to settle and the water clears? Your mind works the same way. When you're calm, your thoughts will begin to settle, and you'll start to see things more clearly.”
This exercise helps children understand how their emotions can impact their thoughts, as well as provides practice in mindfulness as they focus on the swirling glitter in the jar. Consider having the children concentrate on one feeling at a time, such as anger, and talk about how they can give themselves time for the glitter to settle.
