Understand the Why
All behavior is communication - our job is to discover what the child is trying to communicate with the behavior. Ask yourself, does the child have an unmet need (hungry? tired? feeling unsafe?) Is there a mismatch with the environment (Is it too loud? Is there enough structure?) Once you know what the child is communicating, you can teach the child how to meet needs in a better way. It’s not always easy to know what a child is communicating. Storytelling and situation breakdown are some ways to start to understand the why.
