Try enhancing group activities by making them into multi-sensory experiences that capture a child’s attention. Think about ways to "five-sense" group activities and be sure to include the following: 1. Visuals to engage a child’s sight 2. Sounds to engage a child’s hearing 3. Touch to engage a child’s fine-motor skills 4. Actions to engage a child’s gross-motor skills 5. Movement to engage a child’s sense of balance. For example, adapt story time by allowing children to: stand and imitate the story’s characters, point to and label pictures, sing a song (or use call-backs) with the group, and pass around fidget toys each time a page is turned.
