It can be helpful to teach children to recognize the signals their body gives when they are having big feelings. Talk about what it feels like in your body when you are starting to get upset (tight fists, hot cheeks, throat closing). Have children talk about their own experiences, share them in pairs or small groups, and write about, draw, or act out their body signals. Once they have a chance to identify their body signals, teach them different ways to let off steam. These include things like breathing exercises, movement, getting a drink of water, asking for help, or talking with a friend or trusted adult
