Try an activity to identify and express emotions in a positive, constructive way: Play a game with child that focuses on how each person feels when a particular situation happens. Take a small box or tub of blocks and divide it by two. Child will take turns with an adult or peer and place a block to build a tower. The adult will start by placing a block and identifying an emotion and an example of when this happens. The statements can be silly or serious to make the game more interesting. For example, the adult places a block and says, “I am happy when it’s sunny outside.” Then, child takes a turn by placing a block and making a similar statement “I am happy when I go out with my mom to get ice cream.” Change the emotion after both participants have taken a turn. When all the blocks have been used to build the tower, knock them down.
